The Extra Light Project
Event / fog and light installation | Noorderkerk, Amsterdam, 2009

www.extralightproject.org

The Extra Light Project engaged the social interface between art and religion by juxtaposing
the creation of collective meaning and the creation of a specific visual effect. This project consisted of three phases including an installation-event, an exhibition comprised of group research, and a book publication.

Installation-event

The central event of the project was a smoke and light installation in the Noorderkerk with the participation of 100 theologians and clergymen. The clergymen taking part in The Extra Light Project: Installation did not have assigned roles, they did not wear robes and were present in the church as the core audience of the event. This event took place on the 10th of December 2009.

Working groups
Two months before the actual installation-event, The Extra Light Project: Installation was interpreted by two working groups, one comprised of artists, scholars and writers, and the other comprised of theologians and clergymen. The two groups met independently in an attempt to predict and interpret the social and aesthetic implications of the upcoming installation. Prior to these working group sessions, participants completed a questionnaire about The Extra Light Project: Installation and were asked to illustrate their individual interpretations with visual material. The only information given to the participants of these groups was where, when and
how the work would take place. After each group had independently formed its own interpretations, the two groups were brought together to compare their readings of The Extra
Light Project: Installation.

Exhibition
The video recordings of the three working-group sessions was shown during the exhibition
The Extra Light Project: Predictions at the Lloyd Hotel in Amsterdam. This exhibition run between the 2nd and 12th of December 2009 with the opening on the 2nd of December at 17.30.

Book
A book, entitled Becoming Christian was published by Skandalon in connection with
The Extra Light Project. The book contained transcripts of conversations that took place from 2007 to 2009 between
Saša Karalić and Jean-Jacques Suurmond, theologian and writer. The book was presented during the opening of The Extra Light Project: Predictions.
